The Edmonton Police are investigating the suspicious deaths of two young children after responding to a report of an assault on a woman on Wednesday evening.

The police said that they responded to the call at about 5:30 p.m. in southeast Edmonton in the area of 79 Avenue and 71 Street.

They said that when officers arrived at the scene they discovered a woman with serious injuries.

Later on that evening, officers received a report of a man “acting erratically”  at about 8:30 p.m. Police say he broke into a garage at 73 Street and 80 Avenue.

It was determined that the man was a suspect in relation to the earlier assault. The man was arrested and remains in police custody.

The Edmonton Police say that patrol officers returned to the apartment suite where the assault call originated from after further investigation and found the two deceased children. They are calling the deaths suspicious at this time.

The homicide section is continuing their investigation, and autopsies results have yet to be released.

The man appeared briefly in provincial court on Friday morning. Court documents show he faces two counts of second-degree murder. He is also charged with assault  causing bodily harm to the children’s mother, and breach of probation for failing to comply with an order on Oct. 31 not to have contact with her.

Staff Sgt. Terrie Affolder said that the children were very young, but did not confirm their ages.

“Their bodies were found concealed underneath piles of various household items,” she said.

She added that the man was the biological father of one of the children, but was not living in the apartment.

“They had a relationship at some point because they had a biological child together, and I believe they were still having a relationship of some sort at this time.”
