A European housing site named Nestpick listed three Canadian cities in the top 20 list of 'Best LGBT Cities 2017.'

Nestpick recognized 100 cities around the world with active LGBT communities.

The ranking was based on a few categories including: dating scene, nightlife, open-mindedness, and low levels of hate crime.

Toronto ranked third in the category, just below Madrid and Amsterdam.

Montreal ranked 12th, just below San Fransico and Paris.

Vancouver ranked 17th, just below Lisbon and Vienna.

The report also looked at each city's national laws impacting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, including the right to marry or adopt.

The top 10 'Best LGBT Cities 2017' (according to Nestpick) are:

1. Madrid, Spain

2. Amsterdam, Netherlands

3. Toronto, Canada

4. Tel Aviv, Israel

5. London, UK

6. Berlin, Germany

7. Brighton, UK

8. Barcelona, Spain

9. New York City, USA

“It’s no coincidence that the world’s most exciting cities have a strong LGBT community, contributing much to the dynamism, openness and prosperity which defines locations such as Madrid, Amsterdam and Berlin”, stated Ömer Kücükdere, Managing Director of Nestpick.

The list was composed in recognition of this year being the 48th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that took place in the summer of 1969 in Greenwich Village, NYC.

It became known as the main event in the uprising of the gay liberation movement and fight for LGBT rights in the U.S.

New York City is already preparing for celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019.
