An Amber Alert issued in Ontario on Thursday night has quickly ended in tragedy.

The subject of the alert, an 11-year-old girl allegedly abducted by her father, was found dead at a home in Brampton.

Police issued that alert at 11 p.m., several hours after 41-year-old Roopesh Rajkumar failed to return his daughter, Riya, to her mom.

“(He) has since made comments indicating he was going to harm himself and his daughter,” police said when they issued the alert.

The girl was dropped with her father around 3 p.m. so he could take her out for her birthday and her mother called authorities when the pair didn’t return by 6:30 p.m.

Due to the seriousness of the situation, Const. Taryn Hill said that investigators responded immediately and issued the Amber Alert once all initial investigative means were exhausted.

However, the 11-year-old was found dead around midnight and Rajkumar was arrested by Ontario Provincial Police a short time later about 130 kilometres north near Orillia, Ont.

The 41-year-old father has been brought back to Brampton to face charges, but police say it’s too soon to know exactly when he will be charged or what counts he’ll face.
