And just like that, we have a new leader for the Green Party of Canada.
The Green Party announced on Saturday night that Annamie Paul would be their new leader. She succeeds Elizabeth May who had been in the position for the past 13 years.
Paul, who is a Toronto-based lawyer, won the leadership vote after collecting 12,090 votes for. She is the first permanent black leader of a major federal political party in Canada.

On the 8th ballot, Annamie won the 2020 GPC Leadership Contest with 12,090 votes.

"When we started this campaign, we set out to make the Green Party of Canada the most diverse, democratic and daring force in Canadian politics," said Paul. "We also set out to make history. Because of you, we succeeded on all counts!"

Many politicians went to social media to congratulate Paul. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau explained that he was excited to work with her to make a cleaner, healthier and more resilient country.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh also encouraged Paul, adding he hopes they can help deliver for Canadians during the current COVID-19 crisis.
