You could call it the most Canadian car theft ever, but at the end of the day it was all just a big misunderstanding.

Halifax RCMP were called around 6:30 p.m. on Monday for reports of a car being stolen from the parking lot of a local business.

Officers learned that the ‘victim’ had parked their car next to an identical vehicle before entering the business, but when they got back outside their car was gone.

It turns out that the owner of that identical vehicle left the same business slightly earlier, got into the wrong car and drove off.

Somehow, their key or fob still worked on the incorrect vehicle, but it took them a bit of time to realize their mistake.

They returned the vehicle to its rightful owner with a full tank of gas and the accidental ‘thief’ was reimbursed for the money they paid for filling the tank.

No harm, no foul, and instead of a stolen car the one party has a fantastic story to tell at their upcoming Christmas parties.
