It’s a milestone for doctors in Canada.
The country’s first-ever face transplant was completed in Montreal in May.
The 30-hour operation on a 64-year-old man, who was badly disfigured in a hunting accident this past May, took place at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital.
Dr. Daniel Borsuk led the team that performed the feat on Maurice Desjardins, who is the world’s oldest face transplant recipient.
More than 100 professionals, including doctors, nurses and other personnel and specialists, were needed to perform the operation.
"This delicate operation is the result of years of concerted, meticulous work by an incredible team and the incredible bravery and co−operation of the patient and his family," Borsuk said on Wednesday.
Health officials confirmed on Wednesday that Desjardins is doing well four months after the surgery.
He’s able to breathe without a tracheotomy, chew with his neck jaws and also smell and speak properly.
