A poll released today shows that in the week since post-G7 rhetoric and diplomatic tension between the U.S. and Canada, shows a bump in support for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The Angus Reid Institute conducted a pair of new studies, before, during and after the G7 meeting. The results show that a majority of Canadians felt Trudeau handled negotiations and political tension between the U.S. and Canada well.
The G7 Summit in Charlevoix, Que. this past weekend saw world leaders gather to discuss global issues. The U.S. President made some remarks following Trudeau’s wrap up press conference where he stated that Canada would “not be pushed around.”
The poll showed that 62% of people thought his “spat” with U.S. President Donald Trump was handled well, and 59% said that his governments countervailing tariffs in retaliation for Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminium.

Canadians overwhelmingly took favour with a “hard” approach toward trade negotiations with the Trump administration going forward, with 70% preferring to risk further angering the President rather than taking a “soft” approach to try to win back and maintain his goodwill.
Trudeau has seen a 12-point jump since the last time Angus Reid asked Canadians to assess his performance. He has regained the endorsement of the majority of Canadians for the first time since last fall.

Not surprisingly, 81% of Canadians said they feel Trump is acting “erratically” and “damaging trust between allies.”Two thirds of Canadians feel that the latest escalations between the two countries will lead to an all-out trade war between the two nations.
The surge in Trudeau’s approval rating comes alongside an uptick in support for his Liberal Party. If a federal election were held tomorrow, 36% of decided and leaning voters say they would cast ballots for the Liberals.
