A 41-year-old man charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 11-year-old daughter is in hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, say police.

Peel regional police say they were contacted by 11-year-old Riya Rajkumar’s mother after her father failed to return her home from her birthday celebrations.

Riya’s body was found in the home of Roopesh Rajkumar, her 41-year-old father, in Brampton, Ont. shortly after an Amber Alert was issued Thursday night.

Police say Rajkumar was arrested by provincial police shortly after Riya’s body was found and was taken to hospital for injuries.

According to Const. Danny Martinez, Rajkumar’s injury wasn’t discovered until after provincial police had transferred the father into the custody of the Peel police.

She says Rajkumar was then brought to a hospital where the gunshot wound was found.

Details regarding Rajkumar’s injury were not immediately released because investigators were still gathering information, says Marttini.

She says police are not releasing further information on the father’s injuries, or any more details on Riya’s cause of death.

Rajkumar is in custody, police say, and will appear in court once doctors determine he is well enough.
