How much does it cost to feed your family every week?
One Liberal leader claims it can be done for only $75, at least when you’re talking about a family of three.
Quebec premier Philippe Couillard was ridiculed for that stance on Thursday, but he didn’t back down from the claim when asked about it again today.
Couillard said it was possible to feed an adult and two teenagers on that amount, but acknowledged the menu would lack meat and variety.
He also said you’d need some creative coupon usage to get it done.
In his comments today, he said he knows people living on that tight of a budget, adding that filling the pantry is almost a full-time job.
While his political opponents are obviously poking holes in his claims, it’s also experts that are saying it’s unlikely $75 would suffice.
Sylvain Charlebois, a Dalhousie University professor, said that the bare minimum grocery bill for a Quebec family of three was $149 a week.
That amount, double Couillard’s example, is from Canada’s Food Price Report.
