While this may be a real buzz kill to your holiday shopping, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is warning consumers to avoid toys that may cause injury to your child.

Each year in the U.S., about a quarter of a million children are seen in hospital emergency departments due to toy-related injuries.

According to Consumer Product Safety Commission, about half of the injuries were sustained to the head and face and 35% of the injuries were sustained to kids ages 5 and under.

In order to avoid the hospital and keep the holidays fun, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has released tips on how to carefully choose a gift for children.

The AAO recommends avoiding toys that shoot objects. According to a clinical study, last year three eye injuries were due to nerf guns and the blurred vision took weeks to disappear.

This year, a Spider Man-themed drone is being advertised as an appropriate gift for kids ages 12 and up. However, the AAO would warn parents of the rotor blades that spin at high speeds.

The Academy adds that when purchasing gifts for children, be sure to read the labels to make sure they're age appropriate.

Now back to shopping!
