The University of Calgary Dino men’s basketball team is in mourning after one of their team members was found dead at Moyie Lake on Wednesday.

Cranbrook RCMP responded to Moyie Lake at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning to attend to a “tragic boating incident,” a release from the Police reads.

Andrew Milner, a University of Calgary team member, fell into the lake when his boat capsized. One of the occupants was able to swim to shore but Milner, the second occupant, did not make it.

RCMP and Search and Rescue engaged in extensive patrols along the shoreline, and were assisted by drones.

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team discovered the missing male deceased in the water.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the young male who died. It’s an unfortunate reminder of how nature can change in an instant and result in tragic consequences,” says Cst. Katie Forgeron, Cranbrook RCMP media relations officer.

The U of C Dinos described Milner as an “outstanding student and a national champion on the basketball floor.”

“But most importantly,” they added, “he was a tremendous young man, and his loss will be felt deeply by all members of the Dinos community.”

Milner was a Nova Scotia-native studying Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, playing in his second year with the Dinos basketball team.

The BC Coroners Service and Cranbrook RCMP are continuing to investigate the incident.
