Mysterious yet incredibly cool looking craters have been popping up in northern Russia, and Scientists believe they could be dangerous for the surrounding region.

Anna Liesowska from the Siberian Times conducted an interview with scientist Vasily Bogoyavlensky, and he explained that the series of large to small, mini craters are speculated to have been created as a result of unusually warm climate conditions above the earth's surface, in conjunction with geological fault lines below. The two combined together led to a huge release of gas hydrates, causing these crater formations.

Apparently the gas being emitted into the atmosphere can cause significant damage to drilling rigs, oil and gas fields, and offshore pipelines.

“We cannot rule out new gas emissions in the Arctic and in some cases they can ignite,” said Bogoyavlensky in an interview with Liesowska.

Further examination throughout the region via satellite found that these craters are more widespread than initially thought.

Some of the craters were filled with water and have expanded to form large lakes.

Scientists are continuing their inquires into this phenomenon.
