Winter isn’t coming, it has arrived. The arrival of the formidable Kelowna winter means we have a battle to fight, dry skin. If we should lose this fight, itchy, uncomfortable and painful skin awaits us on the horizon.

Fortunately, we spoke with the Gandalf of skin care: Kelly Rockvam. As a Registered Nurse at Okanagan Skin Care, a leading medical skin care clinic in Kelowna, she had some wise advice for us as we face our perilous foe. Here’s what she had to say.

Use Protection...

To keep your skin healthy, guard it from the cold, harsh environment that threatens to steal its moisture. When you’re taking a trip outside, apply moisturizer with SPF and cover up as much skin as possible. Wear long sleeves, hats, and scarves. These measures offer the best protection against the sun and cold, dry weather of winter. Fortunately for us, there's a myriad of ways you can rock this look!

SPF

Don’t let these cold, frigid days deceive you. The sun’s harmful rays are still a formidable enemy to your skin cells despite what the thermometer says. This is especially true when skiing as the snow reflects 80% of UV radiation compared to the 25% reflected by sand.

Kelly suggests physical sunscreen instead of chemical sunscreen. In other words, look for SPF that contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These sunblocks can be very elegant and wearable!

Harness Hydration

Give your skin the weapon it needs to fight dryness, arm it with moisture. Feed your skin inside and out with gold standard products such as retinols, vitamin C and E, peptides and growth factors. If you're really suffering, take it up a level with pharmaceutical grade products.

While arming your body with these gold standard products, don’t forget the best weapon of all: water. Consume plenty of water throughout the day to ensure your whole body is at its best.

Regenerate

No, we don’t mean regenerate in the fantasy/ sci-fi sense. By regenerate, Kelly means get more sleep! Let your body relax and rest so it has the energy to fight off dehydration. While you're sleeping, give your skin an extra moisture boost by applying more effective pharmaceutical grade products. Wake up feeling fresh and fabulous!

If you’ve got a particularly stubborn problem with your skin, such as a skin condition, consider visiting skin care specialists.
