What if you were told that by adopting the proper exercise routines and healthy habits, you may be able to reduce your medications and improve your overall well-being?

Well, you may not be too surprised. It’s been a common theory for ages. But a Canadian company, LIVE WELL Exercise Clinic, decided to take this theory one step further by putting it to the test.

“Many international studies have shown the benefits of exercise but we wanted to prove it with our members — average people, many who have multiple chronic health conditions, who often do not even enjoy exercise,” said Sara Hodson, Founder and President of LIVE WELL Exercise Clinic. “Our clientele are not typical gym-goers and yet are making huge lifestyle changes and improving their health because of it.”

LIVE WELL isn’t your typical gym. It’s a medical fitness clinic with several locations throughout Canada, one of which recently opened its doors right here in Kelowna. LIVE WELL has a team of experienced kinesiologists and clinical exercise physiologists who specialize in medical fitness and lifestyle coaching.

The evidence-based programs at LIVE WELL are customized to help those struggling with chronic health issues such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension or heart disease. However, anyone wanting to stay active or prevent future health issues can benefit from the program.

LIVE WELL studied a sample of 200 members who had been in the program for six months, and uncovered the following results:

“We have always known our healthy-lifestyle coaching program worked from seeing changes in our members and hearing feedback from their doctors. But this is the first time we analyzed our member data to prove that exercise truly is medicine,” said Hodson.

There are numerous LIVE WELL member success stories, from canceling bariatric surgery, to reducing antidepressants, to regaining mobility, to getting off blood pressure medications, and even reducing insulin. And one of the best things about using exercise as medicine? No negative side effects.

But let’s be clear — we aren’t suggesting that you stop taking your meds, hop on a treadmill and hope for the best. It’s a careful process, and it should be monitored by health care professionals. LIVE WELL offers clinical supervision and monitors important vitals during sessions, and works closely with members’ doctors to ensure that they are making progress in a safe way.

Also, the issue isn’t necessarily whether or not exercise and healthy habits are good for us. The issue is actually adopting these habits and turning them into a lifestyle. For many, it’s not knowing where to start, or having the motivation to keep it up. LIVE WELL’s supportive community and long-term lifestyle coaching make it easier to show up, stick to your goals and make impactful changes. Some members choose to enlist a friend to add some extra fun and support to the process!
