Many portions of the Okanagan Rail Trail have been under construction this summer as the organization achieved its $7.8 million fundraising target in July. However, the Official Grand Opening of the trail is finally in sight.
The Grand Opening will take place at 11 a.m. on September 27th, at the trail adjacent to the Oyama Boat Launch on Wood Lake. The public is invited to join municipal and community partners and funding agencies at an official ceremony announcing the opening of the trail, followed by a 6.5 km group walk and refreshments.
The trail has been closed for maintenance and upgrades, including laying asphalt along the Kelowna section of the trail. While the majority of the trail will re-open at the end of this month, a section between the airport and Duck Lake will remain closed.
Upon its completion, the Okanagan Rail Trail will span just shy of 50 kilometers, connecting communities all the way from Kelowna to Coldstream. What was once the CN rail corridor has now become a significant and unique addition to several communities across the Okanagan.
The trail’s impressive length, rich history and natural beauty make it the perfect way to enjoy all that the area has to offer. The multi-use pathway is used frequently by cyclists, runners and walkers for both lengthy adventures and leisurely strolls.
The Okanagan Rail Trail aims to encourage locals and tourists to build all sorts of connections — with nature, with health and wellness, with other communities, with the Syilx culture and with each other. Having access to this path, which connects several towns and runs along lakefront, creek and natural habitats for 24 kms, is truly special.
The trail can be easily accessed at any point that it crosses a road.
