Struggling with skin problems or hair loss can be a serious self-esteem killer. With countless innovative products and treatments available, it’s maybe not so surprising that one involves the use of your own blood.

Recently made popular by Kim Kardashian, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), otherwise known as the ‘vampire facial’, has gone mainstream. It isn't as intimidating as it sounds, and many who have tried it are more than happy with the results.

What is PRP, and how does it work?

PRP is a safe, Health Canada approved rejuvenation therapy that can be used to treat both skin damage and hair loss. First, a small sample of the patient’s blood is taken with a syringe. The blood is then spun in a medical centrifuge to create a concentrated PRP gel that can be applied to desired areas.

For skin treatment, the gel is activated as it’s applied, causing the stem cell platelets to release growth factors and proteins which help to rebuild tissues. This in turn stimulates collagen growth and blood vessel formation.

There are a few different application methods including microneedling, fractora and with a syringe.

For hair loss treatment, the PRP is strategically injected into the scalp. The platelets then release growth factors and produce new blood vessels, promoting hair growth.

It may seem a bit spooky, but actually, the medical benefits of utilizing PRP have been studied for years. PRP has been used in a variety of applications including tissue repair, wound healing, inflammation reduction and more.

One of the best parts is that because the patient’s own blood is being used and there are no foreign substances or artificial chemicals involved, there is little to no chance that they will have a bad reaction to the treatment. The risks and downtime required are both minimal; however, it’s important to have the treatment performed by a professional.

PRP should be completed by a doctor or qualified nurse in an accredited medical facility. If you’re interested in trying PRP, you can do so right here in Kelowna at Lakeshore Vein and Aesthetics Clinic. Make an appointment for a consultation to learn more about PRP and find out if it’s the right solution for you.
