(UPDATE: 9:20 a.m.) - The man who shot and killed 12 people at a California bar on Wednesday night has been identified.

Geoff Dean, Ventura County Sheriff, says that 28-year-old Ian David Long has been identified as the suspect in the mass shooting.

The former Marine reportedly killed himself after executing the attack that killed a dozen innocent victims, including Staff Sgt. Ron Helus of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.

Dean, who is set to retire from his post on Friday, also informed the media that Long was armed with a Glock 21, a .45-calibre handgun.

The gun holds 10 rounds, plus one in the chamber, but Long's gun had an extended magazine, which is illegal in the state of California.

Authorities are hoping that a search of the suspect's home will provide some of the answers they're looking for in this case.

Wednesday’s shooting happened during the bar’s weekly College Country Night and the nearby Pepperdine University has confirmed that multiple students were there at the time.

“University officials have been working on site with law enforcement to confirm their safety and well-being,” said a statement from the school. “Our prayers and condolences are with everyone impacted by this senseless act of violence.”

Pepperdine has not cancelled classes for today, but California Lutheran University, which is even closer to the site of the shooting, has done so.

Along with the 12 who were killed, another 21 victims were treated at nearby hospitals and have since been released, says the VCSO.

No information on the shooter or a potential motive has been given at this time.
