Officials are hoping to learn what went wrong from the black box recovered at the site of the crashed Germanwings Flight 4U 9525.

France’s Minister of the Interior Bernard Cazeneuve confirmed Tuesday that the flight recorder, commonly called a black box, has been found and will be investigated in the coming hours. Recovery from the site of the plane crash was ongoing for most of the day, which was made more difficult due to steep and unstable terrain.

The Airbus A320 aircraft was carrying 144 passengers and six crew members when it suffered an accident on its way from Barcelona to Düsseldorf. Some of these passengers have been identified, with Mayor Bodo Klimpel from Haltern, Germany confirming that 16 tenth grade students and two teachers from Joseph King High School were on the flight. The group was on their way back from a student exchange to Spain. Prime Minister Tony Abbot has also confirmed that two Australians have lost their lives.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Spanish President Mariano Rajoy have spoken out about the crash, giving their condolences for those affected and promising to help in this crisis.
