Approximately 1,500 residents in three nearby towns were affected by the evacuation and surrounding areas put on high alert.

The visually stunning eruption not only sent ash into the air, but also lava and it caused lightning. There are no reports of any injuries, but reports indicate the ash has spread as far as Argentina.
