U.S. Coast Guard Searching For Distressed Ship in Turbulent Waters

Authorities are currently searching for a potentially sinking vessel after a mariner made a distress call approximately 10 miles south of Honolulu Harbor on Thursday.

According to audio available to the Coast Guard, the name of the vessel is Kolea.

Watchstanders at Sector Honolulu Command Centre received a mayday call over VHF radio channel 16 from a distressed mariner at 6:37 a.m. The man was reporting flooding aboard his boat.

Air crew and the Coast Guard are currently searching the area: a total 603 square miles so far.

Current on-scene weather conditions are 17 mile per hour winds with five foot seas.

The description of the vessel and number of people aboard are unknown.
