It has been 31 years since a German woman disappeared and was named a victim of murder, but she has suddenly resurfaced with a very interesting story.
In July 1984, a then 24-year-old woman named Petra Pazsitka was reported missing after she failed to show up to her brother’s birthday party. Pazsitka was a computer science student in Braunschweig and was last seen leaving a dentist appointment. Her body was never found but she was declared dead in 1989 and a man convicted of another murder confessed to killing her. Pazsitka was even featured in a German crime watch-style show as missing or murdered.
But now, 31 years later Pazsitka is 55 years-old and alive and well and living in Dusseldorf, according to police. Police located the ‘murdered’ woman as they were investigating a burglary at a home on September 11th. Two investigators visited the home when Pazsitka, calling herself Mrs. Schneider, alerted police to the burglary. They asked her for identification, but she could not prove that she was Schneider.
She confessed that for the past 31 years she had lived in a number of different cities in West Germany under an assumed name and with no identity papers. It is not clear as to the motive for Pazsitka’s disappearance, but it's unlikely charges will be considered as she has not committed a criminal offence. But she must officially register with German authorities as alive.
