“Every time we see one of these mass shootings, our thoughts and prayers are not enough. It’s not enough,” said a somber President Barack Obama during his address to the United States nation following the deadly mass shooting in Oregon.
Obama, visibly frustrated and shaken during his address, is once again advocating for responsible gun laws in America, because as the President stated, the current regulations do nothing to prevent similar situations from happening elsewhere in the country.
“Somehow, this has become routine. We have become numb to this,” said President Obama. “We are the only advanced country on earth that sees these kinds of mass shootings every few months. There is a gun for roughly every man, woman, and child in America, so how can you, with a straight face, make the argument that more guns will make us safer? Does anyone really believe that?”
Obama goes on to point out the numerous other democratic, advanced countries in the world that have virtually quashed mass shootings with sufficient gun legislation.
“We know there are ways to prevent it,” said Obama. “And of course what’s also routine is that somebody, somewhere will say that ‘Obama politicized this issue.’ Well this is something we should politicize. It is relevant to our common life together, to the body politic.”
Drawing his passionate speech to a close, Obama called on all Americans to get informed when it comes to the statistics and the facts surrounding gun violence.
“This is a political choice we make to allow this to happen every few months in America. We collectively are answerable to those families who lost their loved ones because of our inaction.”
Calling for change, Obama reiterated that implementing sufficient gun legislation in America is something that needs to be collectively addressed by the entire nation, politics aside.
“This is not something I can do myself.”
