The “three amigos summit,” as it’s affectionately called, will be hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this time around.

On June 29, the 2016 North American Leaders’ Summit will be held at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Ont.

Trudeau will have the opportunity to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama and President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, to discuss the North America economy as well as job and community growth.

This will be the first time since 2007 that Canada will host the Summit.

Almost 530 million people make up North America and the region’s economy represents more than one-quarter of the world’s GDP. The three countries have some of the closest ties when it comes to international trade and foreign investment.

According to the Government of Canada, even though the country trades mostly with the U.S., trade and investment with Mexico is growing.

In 2015, North American trilateral merchandise trade amounted to $1 trillion USD and the combined GDP has more than doubled over the past two decades, from $8 trillion USD in 1993 to $20.6 trillion USD now.

In 2015, Canadian companies invested over $463 billion into the U.S. and Mexico.

Because all three countries are so close geographically, each is facing similar issues. The shared land borders also bring common security risks, like drug trafficking and international crime.

The leaders are expected to discuss economic, security and environmental challenges.
