Thousands of illegal guns have turned into steel rebar, thanks to the L.A. Country Sheriff’s Department.
During the 23rd annual gun destruction event in L.A., 7,044 weapons that were confiscated by police officers were destroyed.
The guns are melted in compliance with California Penal Code, which calls for weapons that are unable to be sold to the public or returned to their owners, to be destroyed.
The metal rebar will be used for upgrades to freeways and bridges in Arizona, California and Nevada.
“For the second year in a row, I have the privilege of overseeing our annual gun destruction event,” said Sheriff McDonnell.
“Today, over 7,000 firearms will be translated from their potential of destruction into the certainty of construction. These weapons which were used to harm, take away life, and effectively destroy happiness, families and communities, will be converted into something positive and beneficial.”
All of the guns were transported to the Gerdau Steel Mill in Rancho Cucamonga. There, the guns were put into the company’s furnace and melted.
This year the confiscated guns came from:
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department: 4,035 guns
Los Angeles Superior Court: 868 guns
El Monte Police Department: 92 guns
Beverly Hills Police Department: 49 guns
Compton Police Department: 2,000 guns
