A devastating earthquake has rocked Italy and dozens are reported dead while more than 130 are still missing.
The magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook central Italy at 3:36 a.m. local time (6:36 p.m. Tuesday PST) approximately 10 km south-east of Norcia, Italy. According to local news reports, three towns have been reduced to rubble and the death toll is currently at 73 and expected to rise.
The town of Amatrice is said to be the hardest hit as the mayor described the community as “no more.” According to the USGS, the region was hit with about 40 more quakes over the three hour period following the large earthquake.
The three hardest hit regions include Umbria, Lazio and Marche and the towns of Amatrice, Accumoli, Arquata del Tronto and Pescara del Tronto are reportedly among the most heavily damaged.
Offers of help have poured in from all over including France, Turkey and Israel as well as from the European Commission.
A video posted by a government organization shows teams finding people under the rubble and working to rescue them. The rescue efforts continue and Facebook has activated its safety check feature so loved ones can find out if their family and friends are okay.
