Most of us have been there. We tell someone our full name and they repeat it back and ask “what kind of name is that?”

First of all, why do people ask that? I know it’s probably well-meaning, but, come on, have a filter.

Secondly, you may or may not be able to answer that question, depending on how much you know about your family (and how honest they were with you.)

If you’re wondering where your last name originates, and where it can be found around the world, look no further.

A website called Forebears features a section just on surnames, which will show you all the details about the name you were born into.

It ranks how common your last name is, tells you how many people have it, and what countries it is most prevalent in.

In even better news, there are 11 million surnames on the site.

So there, snoopy question askers. Look it up.
