Former New England Patriots tight end, Aaron Hernandez, was found dead in his prison cell on Wednesday morning.

The 27-year-old’s death has been ruled a suicide, which came just five days after he was acquitted of double murder.

According to a statement from the Massachusetts Department of Correction, Hernandez was found unresponsive in his single cell by corrections officers who attempted to revive him at 3:05 a.m.

He was transported to UMASS Leominster where he was pronounced dead by a physician at the hospital at 4:07 a.m.

“Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window,” the statement said. “Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.”

Hernandez was drafted by the Patriots out of the University of Florida in the 2010 NFL Draft.

He had an impressive start to his career, which was derailed when he was arrested for the murder of Odin Lloyd in June 2013 before being indicted in August of the same year.

In April 2015, Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder in the case and was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

He was also indicted for the 2012 double murder of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, but was found not guilty in that case just five days ago.
