Canadian citizens continue to possess one of the top five most powerful passports in the world.
According to Passport Index, a global survey that ranks how powerful passports are from each country in the world, Canada is ranked as having the fifth powerful passport.
However, you might be wondering what exactly makes a passport powerful?
Passport Index ranks passports from across the world on their total visa-free score, meaning how much global mobility the passport holder has.
The ranking scores are based on how many countries will give visa-free access to the passport holder.
Citizens of a country such as the top-rated United Aram Emirates are able to travel visa-free to 179 countries worldwide.
Whereas citizens of a country like the worst-ranked Afghanistan can enter only 35 countries without undergoing a vetting process to obtain a visa.
While the Canadian passport is already one of the most respected and desired passports in the world it’s still not the most powerful.
Canada now sits fifth out of 98 positions in the ranking system, dropping one spot from its position in the 2018-2019 rankings.
Sitting alongside Canada in the ranking are several world powers such as the United Kingdom and New Zealand, all with a VFS (visa-free score) of 169, Canada’s highest visa-free score to date.
Where the Canuck passport ranks lowest is in the ‘welcoming countries’ ranking, sitting at 74th, tied with African nation Ghana.
The Canadian border requires visas from all but 54 other nations when entering the country.
