A 38-year-old man from the Netherlands has been killed by a polar bear at a campsite in Norway.
It happened near Longyearbyen, a town on the island of Spitsbergen in the Arctic Ocean archipelago of Svalbard.
The bear has since been killed, according to local officials.
It happened just before 4 am.
Officials in the archipelago have been warning about polar bear sightings over the last few days.
“No other person was physically injured by the polar bear, but six people who were on site have been driven to the hospital in Longyearbyen and are taken care of by health staff and local crisis team,” the local government explained.
It added: "The manager is investigating the case.”
In 2011, a 17-year-old British student was killed and four others hurt when they were attacked by a polar bear in Svalbard.
The human to polar bear ratio on the archipelago is thought to be about 3:1.
