After new measures were announced at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, students are reacting to one of the new rules implemented by the school district.

Broward County Public Schools announced on March 21 that students would be required to use clear backpacks as a safety measure.

The clear backpack initiative was one of many measures put into place after 17 students and staff members were gunned down at the Florida high school in February, but students are expressing their disappointment in the school district.

“My new backpack is almost as transparent as the NRA’s agenda,” tweeted one student. “I feel so safe now.”

“As much as I appreciate the effort, we as a country need to focus on the real issue instead of turning our schools into prisons.”

Another student said, “This backpack is probably worth more than my life.”

The school provides the backpacks at no cost. Other measures now being put in place include requiring all students and staff to wear identification badges while on campus.

Classroom doors will also be locked at all times and exterior doors and gates will be locked and secured throughout the day. Fencing and door systems would be used to limit visitor access to just one entrance at all schools.
