Canadians now possess one of the world’s top five most powerful passports.

What exactly makes a passport powerful?

Passport Index ranks passports from across the world on their total visa-free score, meaning how much global mobility the passport holder has.

The ranking scores are based on how many countries will give visa-free access to the passport holder.

Citizens of a country such as top-rated Germany, with positive diplomatic relations around the world, are able to travel visa-free to 161 countries worldwide. Whereas citizens of a country like the worst-rated Afghanistan can enter only 26 countries without undergoing a vetting process to obtain a visa.

Canada now sits fourth in the ranking, moving up from its sixth-place ranking in 2016 and 2015.

Sitting with Canada are Switzerland, South Korea, Japan, Ireland, and the United States with a VFS (visa-free score) of 158, Canada’s highest visa-free score to date.

Happy travels out there Canadians!
