Protests over George Floyd's death hit the United State's capital Friday night and have reportedly led to a lockdown at the White House.

Several videos have surfaced on social media from outside the building where protestors can be seen breaking through temporary barricades.

According to NBC News, the Secret Service closed off the White House press room with several members of the media still inside and not allowed to leave.

Floyd, a black man, died in Minneapolis police custody this week after a white, now former police officer, pinned him to the ground under his knee.

His death has sparked demonstrations against police brutality and racial discrimination in cities across the United States.

Earlier on Friday, the officer responsible for pinning Floyd to the ground was arrested and charged with third-degree murder.

Minnesota law states that a person found guilty of third-degree murder may be sentenced to imprisonment for a maximum of 25 years.

"In the interest of public safety we encourage all to remain peaceful," the Secret Service said in a tweet.
