Canada has filed a submission at the United Nations claiming 1.2 million square kilometres of continental shelf, a claim which just happens to include the North Pole. Countries are able to make claim to continental shelf extensions if they can demonstrate a continuous geographic and economic claim.
Other countries are also staking claim including the US, Denmark and Russia. For his part Russian President Vladimir Putin, no stranger to confrontation, has loudly announced Russia needs to protect its security and national interests in the high Arctic.
Russia is currently building the world's biggest nuclear icebreaker, to add to its existing five-ship fleet.
The Canadian military, by contrast, struggled last summer to buy its troops enough snowmobiles.
