A busy, vacant lot in Central Kelowna could soon be a Hyatt Hotel.

A rezoning application for the lot, located on the corner of Enterprise Way and Spall Road, will go in front of council today.

For many reasons, the rezoning application is being supported by city staff.

“The subject property is currently vacant and underutilized,” said the report to council. “It is located in a strategic position within the Mid-town Urban Centre at the intersection of two busy roads serviced by the nearby rapid transit network.“

The report adds that the property is well served by nearby shopping plazas, Parkinson Recreation Centre, multi-use trails and the Landmark employment hub.

The property has a Walk Score of 74, meaning most errands can be accomplished on foot.

The proposal was originally submitted in September 2016 and calls for a six-storey hotel, as well as a six-storey mixed use building on the property.

If approved by City Council on Monday, the application will move forward to a public hearing.

It’s a time sensitive project, however, as the applicant has a contact with Hyatt Hotels that requires construction to begin in the spring of 2018.
