A video released by TMZ which was allegedly taken on the set of the upcoming film ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ shows what it’s like for an animal actor behind the scenes.
In the video, an animal handler is seen forcing a German shepherd-type dog into the waters of an intensely swirling pool. The clip eds when the dog is pulled beneath the raging waters and a group of people rush over to it.
If you’re going to see the movie because you love dogs, PETA is urging you to think otherwise.
According to the animal right’s group, the dog for the film was provided by Birds & Animals Unlimited (BAU).
“Please, pledge to avoid contributing to this cruel practice by not buying tickets to A Dog’s Purpose or any other movies that use live animals,” PETA wrote in a recent blog post.
BAU has rented out animals to hundreds of other productions, including The Hangover, Marley and Me, Game of Thrones, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
According to PETA, an eyewitness who worked at BAU documented chronic neglect, including sick and injured animals who often went without adequate care and food.
‘A Dog’s Purpose’ producer Amblin Entertainment and distributor Universal Pictures released a joint statement in their defense.
“While we continue to review the circumstances shown in the edited footage, Amblin is confident that great care and concern was shown for the German Shepherd Hercules, as well as for all of the other dogs featured throughout the production of the film,” they wrote. “There were several days of rehearsal of the water scenes to ensure Hercules was comfortable with all of the stunts.
“On the day of the shoot, Hercules did not want to perform the stunt portrayed on the tape so the Amblin production team did not proceed with filming that shot.”
"Hercules is happy and healthy," they added.
