It’s hard to imagine what the firefighters fighting B.C.’s wildfires are going through.
The front lines of a wildfire have often been described as “hell on earth” and it’s not difficult to see why.
As thousands of men and women battle dozens of fires across the province, the first official trailer for a very relevant movie was released on Wednesday.
The movie is called “Only the Brave” and it’s about the elite crew of firefighters who battled the Yarnell Hill Fire in Prescott, Arizona four years ago.
The 20 person crew was called the Granite Mountain Hotshots and they specialized in fighting wildfires.
On June 30th, 2013, a dramatic shift in strong winds led to 19 of the 20 firefighters being overrun and killed by the fire.
Along with being the deadliest wildfire since 1991, it was the greatest loss of life for firefighters in a wildfire since 1933 and the greatest loss of firefighters in the U.S. since the September 11th attacks.
At the memorial for the 19 fallen firefighters, Vice President Joe Biden famously said, “all men are created equal, but then, a few become firefighters.”
Although “Only the Brave” is just a movie, it highlights the very real risks and potential outcomes faced while fighting a wildfire.
The wildfires that B.C. has faced this summer aren’t the only connection the province has to this particular film, as Kelowna born actor Taylor Kitsch plays one of the lead roles.
“Only the Brave” comes to theatres on October 20th, 2017.
