It’s a fine four fendered friend and it’s making waves in Kelowna.
Based on the beloved story by Ian Fleming, the incredible motor car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the adventurous Potts family debuted on the Kelowna Actors Studio stage on Wednesday, December 2nd.
Right from the beginning of the performance, the cast and crew had the entire audience engaged and clapping along to all of the classic tunes including, "Me Ol’ Bam-Boo," "Posh!," and of course, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."
Actor Rick Worrall embodied the charismatic and eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts wonderfully, equipped with a voice that was strikingly similar to Dick Van Dyke himself.
Joined by the lovely Truly Scrumptious, played by Laura Benty, and his darling children Jeremy (Ryne Van Vliet-Brown) and Jemima (Hannah Friesen), the Potts clan brought the audience on a daring adventure to the childless, far away kingdom of Vulgaria.
Greeted by the outlandish Baron Bomburst, played by Brandon Shalansky, and the flamboyant Baroness Bomburst, played by Delphine Litke, the Potts family find themselves in a bit of a sticky situation.
But with hard-word, dedication, and a little help from Chitty, the Potts family and the people of Vulgaria manage to take down their shellfish leaders and restore joy to the kingdom.
The hilarious spy duo Boris and Goran, played by Jackson Klein and Josie Morrow respectively, provide a little extra comedic relief for the audience. From their entertaining "Vulgarian" accents to their witty British cultural references, the energy exuding from these two was certainly a focal point for the audience.
Even Chitty, the main prop and star of the show, put on a great face. Designed and detailed, the magical motor car closely resembled the iconic Grand Prix from the film.
The singing was no easy feat to say the least, but was well delivered. On the other hand, the choreography was not as seamlessly executed.
Overall, the audience appeared to genuinely love the Actors Studio’s performance of the classic 1968 musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, honouring the cast and crew with a standing ovation and boastful cheering.
A musical fitting for children and adults alike, oh what a happy time you’ll spend with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the Kelowna Actors Studio.
