Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson announced today the City of Vancouver will be adding free public-WiFi in more than 600 locations across the city.

Free public-WiFi will be added to the downtown core and numerous other areas, including Granville Street, Canada Place, English Bay Beach, Broadway, Commercial Drive, Gastown, Downtown Eastside, and more.

This expansion ranks Vancouver as the third largest provider of free public-WiFi in North America - just behind New York and Washington.

"We really believe that free public-WiFi is a critical part of making a city more digitally connected and more equitable for everyone whose using the tools," said Mayor Robertson.

He added that it's great for business, economic developments and will help tourists navigate and experience the city.

The expansion is part of Vancouver's ongoing digital strategy - a goal that started in 2014, to expand free public access throughout the city.

At that time, Shaw was selected to work with the City on the expansion project.

"We believe that Canadians should not have limitations on how they enjoy life online - wherever they are or on the go," said Jim Little, executive vice president at Shaw.
