What would happen if we all worked together to collectively care for our children? That was the vision Jody Schmuland, owner and director of AltaVie Health Clinic, had when she first took over the Kelowna perinatal and pediatric centre.

“I lived abroad with my husband and three kids for 13 years in Central America and Thailand, and saw many different cultures that emphasized the importance of villages caring for children as a community,” says Jody. “When we moved back to Canada, I knew I wanted to be a part of some version of that village in Kelowna, and that meant harnessing the power of women.”

She first started working for AltaVie Health Clinic as an office manager, eager to take on any position that would allow her work with mothers and babies. What happened soon after is a testament to Jody’s go-getter attitude.

“Although it was quite a bit smaller at the time, the environment of the clinic was so inspiring and I had a vision for how it could grow,” Jody explains.

Today, AltaVie Health Clinic is an integrated health clinic made up of a dedicated team of chiropractors, massage therapists as well as a Registered Dietician and Naturopathic Doctor (ND). They provide focused care to women at all stages of their health and wellness journey, including during pregnancy, after birth and through to menopause. They also provide pediatric care for babies and children under the age of 16.

“We are a team of 13 highly educated and passionate people dedicated to making life better for women,” says Jody. “Everyone at the clinic works together as a community to provide the best possible care for mothers and their children.”

According to Jody, this clinic is one-of-a-kind in the Okanagan, and fills crucial gaps in today’s highly stressed healthcare system.

“Women’s health is so intricate and dynamic,” says Jody. There has been a shift in family doctor availability and our team is here to help bridge any gaps during preconception, pregnancy or when kiddos are not at their peak all the way through the perimenopause phase.

Through cross-discipline collaboration, AltaVie’s team is able to provide truly holistic care to women and their families.

“Our Naturopathic Doctor can assess patients and is able to write prescriptions if needed, our chiropractors and massage therapists are incredible at what they do for moms and babes, and our team works together if a patient needs a helping hand with their kiddos,” Jody beams.

Jody considers herself extremely lucky for the team she works with. “I can’t stress enough how proud I am to work with such amazing women,” she says. “There are no egos getting in the way—just a pure passion for giving women and children the care they deserve.”
