Curtis Gedig is no stranger to hard work. Born and raised in the Okanagan, Curtis spent over a decade chasing his dream of professional hockey, playing for Ohio State, spending time in Colorado, and eventually playing in Europe for five years. But like many athletes, the day came when it was time to hang up his skates and figure out the next chapter. That chapter, as it turns out, is in real estate.
Curtis draws on his past to fuel his current success, highlighting the discipline and teamwork ingrained in him through years of playing competitive hockey. "The discipline's the big thing," Curtis explains. "We're always taught as hockey players that you’ve got to work when nobody’s looking." This lesson has carried over into his career in real estate. He recognizes that, much like hockey, success in real estate requires putting in the effort behind the scenes, when no one else is watching.
Curtis thrives on the independence that real estate affords him. "I knew being in real estate, I could kind of do the same thing," he says. "Pick my own schedule, and if I wanted to work 15 hours in a day, I could, or if I wanted to work four, I could." That freedom has become a key motivator in his career switch, allowing him to harness his work ethic and self-discipline in a new arena.
After returning to the Okanagan from Europe due to injury, Curtis faced a challenging transition. With a double knee surgery behind him, he began his real estate journey during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, finding a home at Coldwell Banker. What drew him to Coldwell Banker was the team-oriented atmosphere, which felt reminiscent of a locker room. "They have such a good brand of people," he recalls. "It’s almost like a team. When I was walking into a brokerage, it was like walking into a locker room." That feeling of camaraderie and support has been a significant factor in his success as a real estate agent.
Curtis’ hockey background also plays a role in how he approaches his clients. He likens the buying and selling process to being part of a team. "It’s teamwork for me," he says. "I just like being upfront, honest, working hard for them. That’s just kind of me, and just being genuine, just being myself." He sees his role as more than just an agent; he’s a teammate, working alongside his clients to help them achieve their goals.
In the competitive Kelowna real estate market, Curtis has made a name for himself by adapting to each client and situation, drawing on his negotiation skills and building strong relationships. "I think just being a nice guy, you get these good connections with the other agents," he explains. "You kind of adapt to who you’re negotiating against and to each client individually." This flexibility and relationship-building help Curtis stand out in a crowded market.
With four years of real estate experience under his belt, Curtis has already had some notable successes, but it’s the more challenging deals that he finds most rewarding. "There’s been a couple of deals that are really intricate, a lot of moving parts," he recalls. "When you shake their hand at the end of the day, it’s like, okay, that was cool. That was fun. It was chaos for a while, but now we’ve completed the job."
Curtis Gedig’s story is one of persistence, adaptability, and hard work. Whether it’s on the ice or in the real estate market, Curtis has shown that dedication to one’s craft and a genuine commitment to teamwork can lead to success. If you’re looking for an agent who will go to bat for you and make the process as seamless as possible, Curtis’ experience and approach make him a great teammate in your real estate journey.
