Focus on personal growth by learning from those around you. Be caring, kind, respectful, and vulnerable. Feel comfortable in admitting when you don’t know something, and that you need to go learn more about it. Take opportunities to teach someone something to help their personal growth.
Those guidelines, says Christina Wilson, President of Kelowna-based real estate development company Highstreet Ventures, are the key to finding meaningful success in your career.
Christina, who was born and raised in Penticton, completed the Building Engineering Technology program at BCIT before entering the field as an Architectural Technologist. She later started at Highstreet as a Development Coordinator, where she was given the opportunity to learn and advance. First, she moved into Development Management, then became the VP of Development and Sales. Now, she’s Highstreet's President.
Early on in her career in a male-dominated field, Christina knew she would face barriers that she needed to overcome. As she progressed, she developed strategies that aided her in overcoming those barriers, including focusing on personal growth and looking for learning opportunities in every situation.
“I learned how important it is as a woman in the construction industry to speak up and demonstrate that you’re meant to be there,” Christina says. “I also learned that the companies worth working for will intentionally build supportive environments designed to help you overcome whatever challenges you’re facing.”
