1. Bishop stabbed while preaching in church

The bishop of a church in Sydney, Australia is being treated in hospital after he was stabbed while preaching. Police said several other people were also attacked during the sermon at Christ The Good Shepherd Church. 


2. Bill Maher goes viral with tirade against Trudeau-governed Canada

US comedian Bill Maher has gone viral in Canada with an eight-minute monologue deriding the Great White North. Maher, who is a staunch liberal and supporter of the Democratic Party, claimed Canada had shifted too far to the left under Justin Trudeau and has suffered as a consequence.


3. Trump's criminal trial begins

Donald Trump's trial over allegations he paid hush money to a porn star has begun in New York. It's the first time a former – or current – American president has faced a criminal trial.


4. Alberta sees record-breaking population growth

Newcomer services in Alberta are working around the clock after the province experienced record-breaking population growth of over 200,000 in 2023. Its population is now 4.8 million, with the equivalent of 550 people moving there every day, based on last year's statistics.


5. Oil prices fall despite trouble in Middle East

Oil prices have fallen in the aftermath of Iran's attack on Israel over the weekend. Brent crude is trading at under US$90 this morning, despite expectations of a surge due to instability in the oil-rich Middle East.
