1. Train hauling crude oil derails east of Saskatoon

No injuries have been reported after a Canadian Pacific train derailed near Guernsey, Sask. The train was carrying crude oil and the crash sent plumes of smoke into the air, but an initial assessment indicated there’s no threat to local waterways. The Transportation Safety Board has deployed a team of investigators to the crash site.  


2. Peter Frates dies at age 34

Peter Frates lost his battle with ALS. His family revealed the unfortunate news in a press release, calling his fight with the debilitating disease “a heroic battle.” Frates was the man behind the viral Ice Bucket challenge, which raised millions of dollars to find a cure for ALS. He was 34-years-old.


3. Sydney air quality gets up to 11 times higher than hazardous levels

Fires continue to burn across Australia and it’s caused air quality to get to beyond hazardous levels in Sydney. The Air Quality Index showed many parts of Sydney as 11 times more than what’s deemed the hazardous level of 200. Pictures of the smoky skies were all over social media and tell the tale more than any words possibly could.


4. Seattle to unveil new NHL team name and logo in February

Seattle’s NHL hockey team will unveil their identity in two months. Hockey fans have been waiting patiently, and of course guessing, about what the league’s 32nd team would be called. In February, the wait will be over and the team will announce both its name and its logo. The team will begin play in the fall of 2021.


5. 6 dead after shooting at Czech Republic hospital

Six people have been killed after a shooting in the Czech Republic. It took place at a hospital in the eastern city of Ostrava. According to the AFP news agency, gun rampages are very rare in the Czech Republic and officials are struggling to find the young man’s motive.
