1. Fred Ko, born in 1916 in Vancouver, becomes one of the pandemic’s oldest victims
Fred Ko survived World War I, the Spanish Flu, World War II and so much more, but his lengthy life came to an end this past weekend. Ko, who was born in Vancouver in 1916, succumbed to COVID-19 on what was the province’s deadliest weekend yet. His children said it happened so fast and they were forced to say goodbye to the beloved father and grandfather over video.

2. Massive telescope collapse caught on camera in Puerto Rico
The 57-year-old Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico was once the largest radio telescope in the world, weighing 900 tonnes. One of the cables supporting the telescope snapped in August and another in early November, leading to the entire telescope collapsing under the weight on Tuesday. It was all caught on astonishing video.

3. NHL and NHLPA still trying to figure out details regarding upcoming season
Hockey fans want the NHL to return, but talks between the NHL and NHLPA have not been producing much to be positive about lately. However, Pierre LeBrun reported this morning that the two sides discussed options for a 52-game and 56-game season on Thursday, which would likely not start until mid-January. Nothing is done yet, as economic issues remain.
As per NHL and NHLPA talks last night, 52-game and 56-game both on the table but sources say both the league and NHLPA would prefer 56 games if time allows. Remember that they want to end Cup final in early July.

Again, nothing is done yet. Economic issues remain.
4. Residents of a British village rallying to save their pub
This may not be your typically notable world news that is seen in ‘5 things’, but most people can sympathize with these British lads. Residents of Stonesfield, England are rallying together to try and save their local pub, which is currently up for sale. It’s the only one left in the town and it’s up for sale, so they’re pooling money to try and buy it and keep it open!
