1. Teck Resources abandons bid for $20-billion Frontier oil sands mine project

Less than 48 hours before the federal government was set to rule on the proposal, Teck Resources has withdrawn their $20-billion bid for the Frontier oil sands mine project. Alberta Premier Jason Kenney called the decision “disappointing,” but “not surprising.”


2. Today is the NHL trade deadline

Today is one of the most exciting days of the year for hockey fans. It’s the NHL trade deadline, which means there will be a flurry of trades before the noon PST deadline. They’ve already started, as Ottawa has made a pair of deals this morning. You can catch coverage of the deadline all day long on either TSN or Sportsnet.


3. Daredevil and flat earth theorist ‘Mad’ Mike Hughes killed by homemade rocket

One of the most notable flat earth theorists has died. ‘Mad’ Mike Hughes was killed over the weekend when his homemade, steam-powered rocket crashed shortly after take off in California. The 64-year-old wanted to prove the earth was flat by taking photographs of the Earth while flying his rocket.


4. Prime minister of Malaysia submits resignation

The world’s oldest leader is calling it quits. Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who is 94-years-old, has submitted his resignation to the country’s king. It comes amid talk of forming a new coalition to govern the country. 


5. An 86-year-old sunk a 94-foot putt to win herself a new car

Over the weekend, Mary Ann Wakefield had a chance to make a ridiculous putt to win herself a car at the Ole Miss Rebels basketball game. The 86-year-old had to make a 94-foot putt from one end of the court to the other. To everyone’s disbelief, she drained the monster putt and walked (or rather, drove) away from the game with a brand new vehicle!
