1. Japan confirms first case of SARS-like coronavirus

A SARS-like germ called coronavirus has spread. The illness was originally in China, but a case has now been confirmed in Japan after a man in his 30s travelled between the two countries and spent time with the infected person in Wuhan. The illness has hospitalized dozens and killed one person alerady.


2. Peter MacKay announces he’s running for Conservative leadership

Another person has officially entered the race to become the leader of the Canadian Conservatives. Peter MacKay simply tweeted “I’m in. Stay Tuned,” on Wednesday, confirming what many had already speculated. The former cabinet minister under Stephen Harper joins Marilyn Gladu and Aron Seal as confirmed candidates so far. 


3. Demi Lovato picked to sing anthem at the Super Bowl

Arguably the biggest sporting event in the world is just over two weeks away and we now know who will be belting out the anthem. Demi Lovato has been chosen to sing the Star Spangled Banner, which will surely be a spectacle as always. Girl power is on display this year, as Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will be rocking the halftime show.


4. Mikhail Mishustin is Russia’s new prime minister

Following the resignation of Dmitry Medvedev, Russia already has a new prime minister. Unsurprisingly, Vladimir Putin’s nominee Mikhail Mishustin was easily approved by parliament on Thursday. There were 383 deputies in favour of Mishustin and nobody that voted against the nomination. There were, however, 41 Communist Party MPs that abstained from voting.


5. Smoke from Australia’s bushfires has gone all the way around the world

Smoke from all the bushfires burning across southeastern Australia have now made a full trip around the world. NASA says that the smoke has made it all the way back to Australian skies and has even started to trigger an unusually large number of fire-induced thunderstorms.
