1. 3 dead, 2 missing after family fishing trip in Alaska becomes nightmare
An Alaska fishing adventure over the Memorial Day long weekend turned into a nightmare for the Tyau family, who hail from Hawaii and California. One of the two boats they chartered did not return to land on Sunday and was eventually found partially submerged in the ocean. The bodies of two family members were found inside the cabin, while another was discovered near the boat. Two others are still missing as of Thursday.

2. Sherpa carries man in medical distress down Everest
A sherpa executed an incredible rescue of a man who was found clinging to a rope and almost freezing to death near the summit of Mount Everest. The sherpa was climbing the legendary peak with another group when he came upon the man in medical distress and stopped his ascent. He wrapped the climber up, put him on his back and carried him nearly 2,000 feet down the mountain until a helicopter could complete the rescue.

3. BC dials up pressure on Surrey city council to choose future police service
Will it be the RCMP or a municipal force? That’s the question that Surrey is looking to answer and the Province is ramping up the pressure on city council to make a choice and end five years of uncertainty. Mayor Brenda Locke and the majority of her council want to keep the RCMP, but the provincial government wants the city to stick with its original plan and transition to the standalone Surrey Police Service.

4. 14-year-old spells ‘psammophile’ to win Scripps National Spelling Bee
Dev Shah, a 14-year-old from Largo, Florida, was crowned champion of the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday. It’s been a long journey for Shah, who first competed at the national bee in 2019 before the 2020 version was cancelled due to COVID-19. After disappointing finishes in 2021 and 2022, Shah took steps to sharpen his focus leading into this year’s competition and won by spelling ‘psammophile’.

5. Andreescu advances at French Open, Shapovalov goes against top seed today
Bianca Andreescu knocked off American Emma Navarro in straight sets on Thursday to advance to the third round of the French Open. The only other Canadian still alive is Denis Shapovalov, who will look to book a spot in the fourth round today. However, he will be in tough against the top-ranked player in the world, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain.
