1. Canadian woman surprised by lion while walking her dog
A Quebec woman visiting Ontario was shocked when she came across a lion when she took her dog out for an evening stroll. At first she thought it was a big dog behind a chain link fence, however, she had stumbled across Jungle Cat World in Carlington. The roadside zoo has sparked a debate online with experts saying the enclosure is inadequate.

2. Adam Sandler awarded Mark Twain Prize for American Humour
Adam Sandler was honoured with the Kennedy Center’s award on Sunday to celebrate his comedy and career. The actor, 56, started his career in the late 1980s and is known for his roles in “Spanglish,” “The Water Boy,” “Big Daddy'' and more. The award show saw actors like Chris Rock, David Spade and Jennifer Aniston in attendance.

3. Australia to begin clean up of millions of dead fish
Over the weekend, news outlets in Australia shared images of millions of fish that had died in a river in western New South Wales. Experts say low levels of oxygen in the water killed the fish, which is thought to be caused by a recent heatwave. Emergency hubs have been set up to monitor water quality, surviving fish are being transferred to holding tanks and the Australian government plans to release higher quality water into the large river.

4. New study finds human bacteria preserved on Mount Everest
Germs from coughing and sneezing have been found preserved on the world’s highest peak. Scientists studied hundreds of samples from the final base camp at 7,926 metres high and found that bacteria that normally live in wet, warm conditions were able to survive the frigid temperatures of Everest. Officials say they will study the bacteria to see how humans could potentially impact future life on other planets.

5. California to be hit with 12th atmospheric river of the season
Normally, California is known to be drought stricken. However, this winter season has been another story. The 12th storm of the season is expected to peak on Monday before moving inland on Sunday, bringing heavy rain and snow to the US coastal state. Although the storms have wreaked havoc on residents, officials say California’s historic drought has been cut in half.
