1. Italy swings right as conservative politician claims victory in election

A traditionalist conservative has claimed victory following an election in Italy. Giorgia Meloni has been labelled a far-right populist by many liberal politicians and media outlets because of her scepticism of the European Union and opposition to illegal migration from Africa.

2. Over a dozen killed after gunman opens fire at school in Russia

Over a dozen people have been killed and more than 20 injured after a gunman opened fire at a Russian school. Vladimir Putin's spokesman said the president is "mourning" after the massacre.

3. Rihanna to headline Super Bowl half-time show

Pop star Rihanna has been announced as the headline act for the Super Bowl half-time show in February. The NFL's head of music said Rihanna is a "once in a generation artist who has been a cultural force throughout her career."

4. Pound falls to record low against US dollar

Pound sterling fell to a record low against the US dollar earlier today as world markets continued to react negatively to a tax-cutting budget announced by the British government on Friday. The currency briefly fell to $1.03, down from $1.40 in May and over $2 back in 2007.

5. Chess champion who hinted at cheating promises to reveal more

A world chess champion who has made veiled accusations of cheating against a fellow player has said he will say more "very soon." Magnus Carlsen was recently defeated by Hans Niemann in a major upset. 

And lastly...

In lighter news, one of NASA's probes is set to crash into an asteroid. The mission – known as Dart – is designed to see how hard it would be to stop a large rock from hitting Earth.
