1. Whole of Cuba suffers blackout due to storm

Cuba is entirely without power after being battered by Hurricane Ian, according to government officials. Two people are reported to have died when the category three hurricane smashed into the island's west.

2. Famous mountaineer dies in Himalayas

The body of one of the most famous mountaineers of her generation has been found in the Himalayas. Hilaree Nelson, an American, was 49 years old. 

3. China's currency tumbles against dollar

China's international currency has collapsed to a record low against the US dollar. The yuan sunk to its lowest level against the dollar since records became available in 2011; China's domestic currency, meanwhile, is at its lowest point against the dollar since 2008.

4. Woman jailed for posting nude photos to OnlyFans

A Burmese woman has been jailed for six years after a military court convicted her for posting nude photographs to a pornography website. Nang Mwe San, a model and former doctor, was said to have harmed "culture and dignity" by using adult website OnlyFans.

5. Netflix launching video games studio

Netflix has announced it will establish its own video games studio. The new branch of the streaming giant will be based in Helsinki, Finland.

And lastly...

In happier news, many species of wildlife in Europe are thriving thanks to years of protection and reintroduction projects. A report commissioned by the group Rewilding Europe found that grey wolves, European bison and European beavers are among the best-performing species.
